How Do We Know What Stars Are Made Of ? By Cecilia Payne

Image
Pin-pricks in the celestial sphere, through which shines the light of heaven? Or gods and heroes looking down from their constellations? Or lights kindled above middle earth by Varda Elbereth and brightened with the dew of the trees of Valin or? Science has long pondered the mysteries of the stars. And this is how we finally figured them out. The first thing you learn in astronomy is that the sun and the other stars are giant balls of fiery hydrogen and helium, powered by raging nuclear furnaces in their cores. But this knowledge is surprisingly recent. A hundred years ago, we were starting to plumb the deepest mysteries of the universe with Einstein’s relativity and with quantum theory. But we had no idea what that giant bright thing in the sky was. We didn’t know what stars were made of nor where their energy came from. On the other hand, it’s impressive that we figured it out at all - after all, we’ve never been to a star, never sampled its stuff to put under a microscope. And ...

Stop Trying to be Happy [ Do THIS instead ]

Image
Stop Trying to be Happy [ Do THIS instead ]  When the pandemic first started, I figure doubt what would make me happy and get me through it... having a car. And then I got the car and as I drove home, sat in traffic, searched for parking, my happiness faded…fast. The car didn’t actually make me as I'd expected, because the greener grass came with parking problems, toll booth tags, and car insurance. Sure, I was getting more freedom to get out safely, but at what cost? I think I wanted a car because I thought it would allow me to have a lot more fun? To do cooler things, to see places, just to get out. It would be better for my mental health, and it would make me happier. I thought it would make me happier. This got me thinking about our collective pursuit of happiness and all the books and movies that ask us: What Makes Us Happy? How many want to know what the secret to happiness? But what if we’re asking the wrong question?  What if the pursuit of happiness is a road that leads...

India, unfortunately, has brought this word into this western world recently. The Christian world had its own contemplative order, contemplative state of mind. But the gurus and other shave brought this idea of meditation . And these people have invented or brought their old tradition from Tibet, from Zen in Japan, from Burma, from India, the mischief began in India first: that meditation means you must practice something, practice a method, practice to be silent, practice to be aware, practice the moment, which is the present and so on, so on – practice. When you are practiecng something, you are being repetitive. If you are playing the pianoand you are practicing, you may be practicing the wrong note.
